Fight Club

This 1999 classic tells the story of an insomniac office worker (Edward Norton) and a charismatic yet dangerous soap maker by the name of Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) joining hands together, forming an underground fight club that evolves into much more.

There are so many aspects to like about Fight Club. Personally for me, the performances from Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter were all astoundingly good. The actors do such a great job bringing these complex characters to life and executing the film’s intriguing plot.

David Fincher’s direction is excellent as well, keeping the pace consistent despite the film’s lengthy runtime of 139 minutes. However, the real star of Fight Club is none-other than it’s central plot. Fight Club is more than just a bunch of men fighting in an underground basement, so please do not jump into any conclusions just from looking at the film’s title.

Shutter Island

You would have never thought that the great Martin Scorsese directed this psychological thriller!

Shutter Island stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshal who investigates the disappearance of a psychotic murderer who escaped from a mental asylum. Shutter Island also stars Mark Ruffalo as Teddy’s partner in crime and Sir Ben Kingsley as Dr Cawley, the head of the compound.

Scorsese nails it with this psychological thriller, he manages to create a strange and frightening atmosphere within the span of 138 minutes to tell Teddy’s story. Leonardo DiCaprio is phenomenal as usual, bringing such sensitivity to the character and makes this performance of his very nuanced.

The mystery and horror elements of Shutter Island makes this a perfect example of how a psychological thriller should play out. Lastly, Shutter Island’s plot twist at the end will surely leave viewers scratching their heads when the credits roll!

Gone Girl

Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, who discovers that the entire media focus has shifted on him when his wife, Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) disappears on their wedding anniversary.

Gone Girl feels like two different films mashed into one. Its first act feels like a romantic drama while its other two acts are a psychological thriller. A shift in the film’s storytelling around the 40th minute mark will make viewers gasp and be locked in for what’s in store.

Ben Affleck is good as Nick Dunne, but Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne is truly the real show-stopper of the film. Rosamund owns this role and plays her brilliantly, making Amy Dunne one of the most iconic characters in film of the 21st century. Pike received an Oscar nomination for her enthralling performance as Amy Dunne.

David Fincher executes every scene to perfection with his talented filmmaking skills and makes Gone Girl arguably one of his best films to date. Gone Girl is a must-see for all, catch it now on Netflix!
