4 Underrated Sci-fi Netflix Films You Should Check Out!

There’s no denying that most of us out there dig a good sci-fi flick once in a while. The horrors of space, alien invasions, and apocalyptic monsters are some of the many reasons why sci-fi is beloved by many.

Here are 4 sci-fi films on Netflix that may have flown under your radar!

Ad Astra

An ambitious astronaut, Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) must embark on a mission to Neptune to unravel the truth about his father’s disappearance and a mysterious power surge that threatens the stability of the universe.

Ad Astra is visually stunning. Hoyte van Hoytema’s incredible cinematography compliments the intriguing premise of this film. Ad Astra gives viewers a more thought-provoking space mystery instead of an action-packed one.

Despite Ad Astra’s minimal dialogues, Brad Pitt manages to make the most out of it. Brad Pitt’s subtle performance justifies Roy McBrides’s past traumas and his emotional depth throughout the film.

This slow-burn film is worth the watch for its technical aspects and a compelling lead performance by Brad Pitt.

There’s no need for an introduction when it comes to the great Bong Joon Ho. Okja is fairly underrated when compared to some of Bong’s best work such as Parasite, Snowpiercer, and Memories of Murder.

Okja is essentially about young Mija who shares a deep connection with her constant companion, Okja the super pig. Mija then risks everything when her best friend is taken away from her by a New York based multinational livestock company, Mirando Corporation.

This film has something for everyone to like. Bong Joon Ho’s writing and direction brings out the best performances from his actors. The cast consists of Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, and Lily Collins, just to name a few.

Okja is emotional, charming, funny, and smartly executed by Bong. There’s a huge nod towards animal cruelty, capitalism, genetically modified food, and today’s food industry which I dearly appreciated.

It’s an important film and one that should be recognized by all viewers!

The story follows Lena (Natalie Portman), a former soldier and biologist who decides to join a mission to uncover the truth behind her husband’s condition inside Area X. Mysterious Area X consists of mutated landscapes and creatures which menaces human lives and their sanities.

This film has an unpredictable narrative that makes us as viewers question what’s real and what’s not. Annihilation is unlike any other sci-fi film out there. It’s mysterious, thrilling, horrifying, and trippy!

This 2018 Netflix original ticks all the right boxes be it, performances, production design, sound, or screenplay. Annihilation has many interpretations, some say it’s a metaphor for cancer and some call it a self-destructive film in all aspects of life!

It’s more than your ordinary sci-fi flick, hence do check it out!

An unemployed writer who suffers from alcohol addiction named Gloria (Anne Hathaway), returns to her hometown after her boyfriend kicks her out. She then comes to realize that she’s somehow connected to a giant monster which is causing destruction and chaos in the beautiful city of Seoul.

Colossal feels like a film inspired by both Godzilla and Lost in Translation. This black comedy has a few flaws but it’s definitely worth the watch for its unique concept and premise.

Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudekis are great as the title characters of this film, Gloria and Oscar. Some of its visuals can be better but Nacho Vigalondo’s clever screenplay and direction compensate for it.

Be sure to add Colossal on your watchlist for its well-executed twists and peculiar narrative!

These 4 films are a definite treat to watch, get your thinking caps ready for the sci-fi experience ahead!
