8 Tips for Successful Communication

Communication is a word that we often hear everyday and all day.  We cannot live our life without any communication. We communicate daily by talking to people on the phone or having face-to-face communication.

Other than that, we also communicate by writing reports, memorandums, e-mails, and business letters.

It is essential to learn from our communications, from our successes and our failures, and to develop and enhance our communication skills. The more we write and the more we speak, the more we can improve our communication skills.

Here are some 8 tips that I would like to share. If you follow these tips, you will definitely be able to see some improvements when you communicate.

Tip No 1 – Reading

Reading skills should not be underestimated!!  Many of us enjoy reading, whether it’s from our phone, magazine, or newspapers. In order to communicate well, we need to read daily. Reading will help us gain information and knowledge, and thus, we can communicate easily. We only need to spend 10 to 15 minutes daily on this activity. 

Tip No 2 – Listen Intelligently

Approximately 45% of our day is spent on listening. Many times when people communicate, there is a communication breakdown or failure. One of the reasons for this could be because of having poor listening skills. Remember that communication is a two-way process. Listening is just as important as speaking.

Tip No 3 – Think and plan

There is a saying, think and plan before you speak. Plan all your communications correctly before you speak to your receiver. Once your words are out, you cannot bring them back.

 Tip No 4 – Use appropriate language

When we communicate, we should use the ABC concept.   

A for Accuracy

B for Brevity

C for Clarify

The use of clear, simple language, and direct to the point without any ambiguity is appreciated when we communicate. So the same is expected from others.

Tip No 5 – Be open-minded

While communicating, consider other people’s viewpoints, be willing to adapt, and listen to their ideas and opinions. Have an open mind while communicating with them. Do not be negative when others speak.

Tip No 6 – Timing

Time your communication appropriately. Consider the best time for the communication, the receiver’s preference, and how long it should be. Long-winded people can be a bore to listen to when they speak.

Tip No 7 – Relevant Language

The use of relevant language is of utmost importance when communicating. Use words which are relevant to the topic and which will be understood by the recipient. Imagine speaking to a person with lower qualifications and using difficult, bombastic, and complex words. It would be tough for the recipient to understand!!

Tip No 8 – Obtain Feedback

One of the most important skills when communicating is knowing that your recipient understands what you are saying. Obtaining feedback from the recipient is crucial to ensure that the communication is effective. 

If messages are not understood, do we blame the recipient? Ask yourself why the communication failed and how it could have been improved in order for it to be effective.

Final thoughts

In my opinion, if we do communicate in the right and proper manner, we would always gain in every situation. Poor communicators will often lose out on many opportunities in their lives.

It’s not too late now to learn how to communicate effectively. Life is all about learning new skills and improving on our weaknesses. We just have to move forward to make a change today!!
