Not even powerful and well-known politicians, celebrities and royalty are spared by their unsavory past actions. Everyone has skeletons in the closet. We are mere mortals and make mistakes during our lifetime. Bad and rash decisions are made because we think it was a good idea during that moment in time. For some, coercion by blackmail or parental-making decisions may have been factors. It’s impossible to predict the future or change the past but one thing is certain, “you reap what you sow”. At times, those indiscretions will surface after several years or even decades.
Harvey was a well-known movie mogul infamous for sexual assault and misconduct. There were numerous charges against him and in some cases his attorneys argued that the statute of limitations on a sexual battery charge had run out. In civil law systems, it’s a prescriptive period passed by a legislative body to set the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated. These allegations date as far back as the 70s when he was a promoter in New York. He promised to help advance his victims’ careers in return for sexual favors. Subsequently in October 2017, The New York Times published a story detailing decades of allegations of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein. Some high-profile actresses who were involved include Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. Platrow says she was propositioned as a 22-year-old.
Former porn star Sola Aoi announced her pregnancy on social media which caused a lot of controversy (The Star-2018). Her announcement divided Japanese web users whether it’s a blessing or a curse. Some accused her of being selfish as the child will be bullied because of her previous career which started in 2002 at the age of 18. She wrote in her blog “If you think the children of AV (adult video) actresses will be definitely be bullied in the future, then that is more of a reflection of your core values. Of course it’s not better to do AV, but if you do AV it doesn’t mean you are unhappy. My desire to have a child is the same as anyone else’s. Good relationships between parents and a child are not necessarily based on a parent’s profession. They are based on a child’s environment.” Most of the commentators supported her action. She seems confident and well prepared. Her statement is profound and with the support and love, any kind of negativity in any case, won’t stick.
Elden appeared as a naked four-month-old baby on one of rock music’s most iconic album covers- Nevermind by Nirvana. Aged 30 years as at the time of writing, he’s suing the band claiming he was sexually exploited as a child. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of “….knowingly produced, possessed and advertised commercial child pornography depicting Spencer”. He claims “to have suffered lifelong damages and extreme and permanent emotional distress with physical manifestations, including loss of education, wages and enjoyment of life” from the 1991 album cover.
Ironically, he has recreated the album cover several times as a teenager and adult wearing swimming trunks – to mark Nevermind’s 10th, 20th and 25th anniversaries. He has the name of the album tattooed across his chest. He told the Guardian six years ago that “It’s always been a positive thing and opened doors for me, I’m 23 now and an artist, and this story gave me an opportunity to work with Shepard Fairey for five years, which was an awesome experience”. In 2008, Spencer’s father, Rick told NPR radio network he had been offered $200 to take part by Kirk Weddle, who was a family friend.
Many law experts have dismissed it as frivolous and should not have been filed in the first place. I’m not a fan of Nirvana because I don’t appreciate grunge but I know and have listened to their songs. When I first saw the album I thought how come the baby didn’t drown? How did they capture that image? It was also about a baby chasing a dollar bill on a fishing hook – capitalism. Everyone trying to make money even the baby until today. Nothing suggestive in a sexual context.
