Inexpensive Beauty Hacks That Everyone Should Know

Measuring up to celebrities can be an expensive and ultimately futile endeavour that will leave you with a drawer full of expensive creams, serums, and makeup.  And a big dent in your wallet. Instead, achieve a gorgeous look on the cheap with these simple and inexpensive beauty hacks.   Some of the tips here are tried and tested by my daughters and me.  

1  Always Keep A Bottle Of Organic Coconut Oil At Home

For Skin

A bottle of organic extra virgin coconut oil is a must-have item in our house.  Besides using it for cooking and baking, it is my skin moisturizer, hair oil, lip balm, and teeth cleanser. Coconut oil is anti-bacterial that helps heal wounds and protect the skin from harmful bacteria. It is affordable and contains no harsh chemicals. If it can be eaten, it can be safely applied on your skin, hair, lips, and under your eyes.  It works well not only as a body moisturizer but also as a makeup remover. It is best to use organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed coconut oil to help minimize the chances of skin congestion.  If you find the smell of coconut oil overpowering, just add a few drops of your favourite essential oils and blend well with the coconut oil. My favorite essential oils for blending with coconut oil are lavender, geranium, and peppermint. This concoction can be used on skin and hair.

However, each person’s skin can react differently to coconut oil. It may clog pores and worsen acne for some people. So, it is not recommended for people with very oily skin.

For Hair

Next time you go out for a run or hit the gym, slather some coconut oil on your hair and toss it in a topknot.  At the end of your workout, undo your bun and wash the coconut oil out—your hair will be shiny and silky-soft without conditioner or any extra effort.  You may also rub a few drops of coconut oil on the tip of your tresses after a hair wash to strengthen and detangle your tresses. Coconut oil is versatile and nourishing and there are tons of ways you can use the kitchen staple to boost shine, repair damage, and protect your strands.

2   Arrowroot Powder to Clear Pimples, Treat Skin Disease And As Makeup

Arrowroot absorbs oils/sebum excellently and promotes natural healing as it penetrates the skin. Rubbing some into pimples before bed and in the morning can reduce oil production, soften skin and dry out blemishes.  Arrowroot powder can also be used as loose powder and blush (mixed with beetroot powder, roselle powder, or cocoa powder). These are my tried and tested beauty recipes.

Arrowroot powder in combination with tea tree oil works very well in treating ringworm on the skin. This is another tried and tested remedy in our home.

3  Baby powder

For girls with fair skin, try using baby powder as a cheaper alternative to compact powder and loose powder.  Apply baby powder on your face as you would with compact or loose powder, followed by your regular makeup routine. Corn starch or talc, the drying agent in the baby powder will naturally absorb oil when placed directly on a surface or oily substance. Because of this natural ability to remove oil from the surface of the skin, the baby powder does not clog pores and does not get absorbed into your pores. Baby powder gives your face a naturally matte finishing while making you smell fresh like a baby!

4  Wash Your Face

Wash your face every night. No product can replace personal hygiene, hydration, and sleep. It doesn’t matter what miracle cream you use if you aren’t taking care of your skin and health.

5  Get Your Beauty Sleep

Not getting enough sleep may worsen acne and cause your skin to develop wrinkles and lose its elasticity.  Skin cells regenerate more quickly at night. Collagen, the protein responsible for helping your skin keep its volume and elasticity, is produced as the skin cells regenerate. There is also more blood flow to the skin during sleep, which delivers the nutrients it needs to recover from a day of exposure to the elements.

Make sleep a priority and you’ll soon see positive changes to your looks and skin. The key is to get 7 to 9 quality hours of shut-eye each night.

6  Don’t harass wet hair

Try not to brush your hair while it is damp. Use a wide-tooth comb, working from the ends of your hair on up. Allow your tresses to air-dry 80 percent of the way before cranking up the hairdryer.

7  Blush For Eyeshadow

Your favourite colour of blush likely works great with your skin tone, so why not apply it on your eyelids too?  Earthy and browner shades work especially well in this situation.

8 Mascara to Cover Grey Hairs

Hair salons are closed during the lockdown but fret not.  Grab your mascara and use it as an emergency tool to camouflage grey roots and you’re good to go for your Zoom meetings in a jiffy.

9  Pink Lipstick As Cheek Colour

Use your pink lipstick of choice as a blush. Just be sure to blend it in evenly with your finger like you would any cream blush.

10  Tea Bags For Puffy Eyes

Don’t toss away your tea bags after you’re done brewing tea. They will come in handy to treat puffy eyes in a flash.  Chill them in the fridge for a while and place them over your eyes for 10-15 minutes to reduce puffiness significantly.
