Movies Malaysians Can Now Expect to Watch In The Cinemas (2021)

Movie buffs can now return to the cinemas to watch their favourite movies!

In recent news, we have learned that Malaysian cinemas will be opened again. This means that we can go back to the cinemas to watch the movies we all have been waiting to see! Due to the pandemic, a lot of movies have been postponed and pushed back to a later date. Some movies were streamed on online streaming sites first.

Before the year is out, here are some movies that you can still catch!

1. Spiral: From The Book of Saw

Release: September 2021

Spiral is an American horror film that is the 9th installment in the Saw film series. Starring Chris Rock, Samuel L Jackson, and Max Minghella, it follows police efforts to stop a Jigsaw copycat killer. The film was initially due to be released back in May 2020. Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was pushed back for release at a later date.

2. Black Widow

Release: June 2021 (USA) / September 2021 (Malaysia)

Black Widow was initially released back in June 2021 to American audiences. However, since Malaysian cinemas have been closed for quite a while, the movie will only be shown in cinemas when it reopens this month.

The movie is an American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring a character by the same name. Played by Scarlett Johansson, this movie follows the character’s confrontation with her past. It’s set after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

3. Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise is pretty much a child-friendly movie that can be enjoyed by families and everyone else. It’s an American fantasy adventure film loosely based on Walt Disney’s eponymous theme park attraction.

The movie is one of the most expensive ones to be made with a budget of US$200mil. It’s released in the USA in July 2021 in theatres and on Disney+ (premier access).

4. No Time To Die (James Bond)

If you are a huge fan of James Bond, then you’d definitely be excited to watch this one. As the 25th spy film in the James Bond series by Eon Productions, this movie is set to be released in Malaysia later in October 2021.

Expect to see returning actors Daniel Craig, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris to this latest installment of Bond films. This installment follows 5 years after the capture of Ernst Blofeld and Bond has left active service. He was later on approached by his CIA officer friend Felix Leiter, who enlists his help to search for Valdo Obruchev, who was a missing scientist. During his search, Bond found out Obruchev was abducted and has to confront a villain whose plans could kill millions of people.

5. Suicide Squad (“Rebooted”)

This version of Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn is a reboot version of the 2016 version. It features some of the 1st version’s original cast and characters (Harley Quinn, Amanda Walker, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang). This latest version sees the exploration of new characters in the story, which are separate from the 2016 cut’s narratives.

6. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Release: October 2021

This is another American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character by the same name, Shang Chi. This movie follows the main character, Shang Chi (played by Simu Liu) where he was forced to confront his past after he is drawn into his father’s Ten Rings organization.

Shang Chi is released as Marvel’s Phase Four of the MCU superhero movie. It was released earlier in the USA in August 2021 and has received positive reviews from critics.

7. Dune (Part 1)

Release: October 2021

Dune is an American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. This movie will be part one of two film adaptations based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. It will cover approximately the 1st half of the book and feature some well-known actors.

This movie revolves around a near-future setting of humanity where Duke Leto Atreides accepts the stewardship of the dangerous plant Arrakis (also called Dune). It’s where the only source of the most valuable substance “mélange” is. The drug is said to be a valuable substance that extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and is made “faster than light” traveling practical.

Duke Leto would bring his son, concubine, and trusted advisors to the planet, knowing that it’s a trap set by his enemies. Duke Leto then takes control of the mining operation on the planet, which is then made dangerous by the presence of giant sandworms. A betrayal leads his son and concubine to the Fremen, who are natives who live on Arrakis’ deep desert.

8. Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga

An American action film directed by Justin Lin, it’s a sequel to the Fate of the Furious released back in 2017. It’s the 9th main installment and 10th full-length movie in the Fast and Furious franchise. A typical action film, expect to see returning actors such as Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez leading the movie.

The latest installment sees the team come together to stop a world-shattering plot led by Toretto’s brother, Jakob. Though critics were wowed by the action stunts, the unrealistic action sequences, and the formulaic script was not really well-received. Nonetheless, Fast and Furious will get a new sequel set to be released in April 2023.

9. A Quiet Place (Part 2)

Release: October 2021

This is the sequel to A Quiet Place, which was released back in 2018. It follows the family from the 1st film as they continue to navigate and survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind aliens.

It has its premiere back in March 2020 but was released in the United States in May 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The film received largely positive reviews from film critics.

10. Eternals

This is another superhero film based on the Marvel comics by the same name. The film focuses on an immortal alien race who emerges from hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from its evil counterparts, the Deviants. This film is part of Marvel’s Phase Four superhero movie of the MCU.

11. The Boss Baby: Family Business

This is the sequel movie in the Boss Baby franchise by the same film, which is an update from the 2017 movie. It’s a family-friendly film that follows the now grown-up Templeton brothers. They were brought back together after the new Boss Baby requests their help to stop a professor from erasing childhood worldwide.

12. Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is another upcoming Marvel superhero movie, which is the sequel to the Venom movie released back in 2018. In this sequel, Brock tries to restart his journalism career by interviewing the serial killer, Cletus Kasady. Cletus became the host of an alien symbiote that is similar to Venom named Carnage.

13. Spider-Man 3: No Way Home

This is the latest installment of the Spiderman movies with the titular character played by Tom Holland. Again, this is an American superhero film that is the sequel to two previous Spider-Man movies – Homecoming (2017) and Far From Home (2019).

In this movie, Peter Parker asks Dr. Stephen Strange to help make his identity as Spider-Man a secret after his identity was revealed in Far From Home. It is said that a 4th Spider-Man movie is in the works following the release of this movie.

14. The Matrix: Resurrections

Release: December 2021

If you are old enough, you’d remember the original Matrix trilogy back in the early 2000s. The series follows a cyberpunk story of the technological fall of mankind, followed by the creation of artificial intelligence leading the way to a race of self-aware machines that imprisoned mankind in a virtual reality system.

This latest sequel will see familiar faces such as Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith returning to the series. They will be joined by some new faces: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and others.
