Foooooooood. A universal language that trumps even love. Most adjectives and superlatives related to romance can too be used for their culinary counterpart. Why are romantic gestures called “cheesy”? It’s because cheese is absolutely delicious. Nothing quite beats the sheer satisfaction of partaking in a delectable medley of culinary wonder. And when it comes to depicting food, Anime has proven to tickle the gastronomical senses far better than reality can. With that, here are 5 mouth-watering Anime to stimulate and tease your tastebuds (virtually, of course).
#5 Yakitate!! Japan (Freshly Baked!! Ja-pan!)
Are you a bread and pastry connoisseur? Do you like breadmaking? Look no further because Ja-pan!! is fresh off the oven for you. The show is rife with uniquely innovative bread and pastries as we follow Azuma Kazuma in creating a bread that can perfectly embody Japan. We’ll see intriguing inventions such as a bread resembling Mt Fuji filled with overflowing curry to represent lava, wasabi bread, and even a turtle-shaped melon bread.
The possibilities are endless for Kazuma and the audience will continuously be in awe of his ingenuity in baking. If you’re not convinced yet, Ja-pan!! is aggressively funny with a plethora of pop culture references on top of exaggerated reactions to eating each bread. Highly recommended oldie but goodie.
#4 Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan (Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family)
Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan is just Fate/Stay Night – food edition. But precisely because it’s just about the food that it’s amazing to behold. Gone are the fights, warfare, and drama, with high-definition cooking and gorgeous food on display to be enjoyed by its rich and colourful cast. Emiya-san is short, sweet, and funny and the food is absolutely stunning, but perhaps the main reason we’re sold is because of how much the main character, Saber, seems to enjoy every dish served before her.
Emiya-san is easy to watch as it lulls you into feeling good and comfy before it swoops in with the tantalising dish of the episode. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of food, especially highly recommended if you’re a fan of food AND Fate/Stay Night.
#3 Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness and Lightning)
Food so good you’ll cry. That is more or less the premise of Amaama to Inazuma; how food makes your day better. The show follows three people; Kyohei, his daughter Tsumugi and Kyohei’s student Kotori as they learn about cooking and the joy food can bring to their somewhat lacking lives. The show makes you grateful for the food your loved ones so carefully prepare for you and their company, as nothing beats having a good meal with the people you care about. Through the eyes of the naive and starry-eyed Tsumugi, the impact of this message is amplified many times fold.
But don’t sleep on the brilliance of the food. Even without the emotional seasoning sprinkled in, the show teases you with the cooking before unveiling delicacy after delicacy that would make you hungry without fail. Sweetness and Lightning will blitz their way into your heart (and tummy) with relative ease.
#2 Isekai Shokudo (Restaurant to Another World)
Isekai Shokudo is otherworldly, in more ways than one. Every Saturday, the Japanese restaurant Nekoya’s door magically appears in another world. For 24 hours, it is accessible to denizens from all walks of the other world, be it elves, dwarves, lizardmen, dragons, and even humans. In the truest of sense, it is also an otherworldly display of food pleasure. The food is unique as it uses otherworldly ingredients at times to create dishes we know and love, and you smack your lips at the visually splendor desperately wishing you could learn how another world’s pasta or stew would taste like. Boasting a large gallery of unique customers from pages of fantasy, the dishes vary so greatly that at least one will get your stomach growling. An added bonus is watching monsters and wizards arguing about whether a ramen or teriyaki chicken is superior which makes for an incredibly fun time.
With a Season 2 recently announced, Isekai Shokudo is definitely worth a shout for a show with gorgeous food and a unique fantastical cast.
#1 Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars)
Arguably the most popular Anime about food, Shokugeki no Soma has mastered the art of displaying and inducing “foodgasms”. This show is what you get if you reinvent the likes of Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece to a food-fighting format. Characters compete for bragging rights as they pit their best dishes against each other, particularly the main character Soma and his love-hate adversary Erina in a mouth-watering battle of diner chef vs elite cook. Shokugeki no Soma doesn’t pull its punches as it does everything to the extreme. The cooking, the food, the audience reaction, and even the tasting process; it exaggerates every aspect it could to promise you one thing, the food is ridiculously yummy. The show isn’t afraid to explore every genre of cooking imaginable from chicken wing based dumplings filled with cheese to alligator fried with a metric ton of spices, nothing is beyond Shokugeki no Soma.
Shokugeki no Soma recently finished its entire run and with 5 seasons to binge and work an appetite over, you will be spoiled for choice.
If you’ve reached the end of this article and are not hungry still, then you’ve made the wise decision to eat before reading this. If not, you need some good food ASAP as you watch these. Buon appetite!
