Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2 – what to expect

No one is a stranger to the worldwide Anime hit Kimetsu no Yaiba. If anything, it might be the most recognisable Anime in the past few years. The show follows Tanjiro and Nezuko, who, after having their family murdered brutally by the Demon Muzan, attempt to find him in an effort to cure Nezuko who had also been turned into a Demon as well as put an end to Muzan’s reign of terror. They are later joined by Demon Slayers Inosuke and Zenitsu and together they form an unbreakable bond as they face a myriad of bloodthirsty Demons to attain peace.

The enthralling tale of a group of friends attempting to secure peace from the clutches of Demons and return one of their own back from Demon to human has taken the world in a vice grip, eager for more. With the success of the Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train movie and a promise of a Season 2, the lack of a proper release date left many impatiently searching social media for the latest updates.

But now, the wait is over. Season 2 of Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) officially aired yesterday on the 10th of October 2021. Nonetheless, as the season has barely started, what is it do we expect to get and will actually get from this latest instalment of the demonic battle Anime?

While it is believed that the season should follow right where the movie ended into uncharted Manga territory, it seems that that expectation is slightly off. Before we get to the next arc chronologically, we will first re-experience the adventures Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke aboard the Mugen Train that most of us have already seen in the movie that was released just last year. The movie will be re-interpreted into a 7-episode Anime format counterpart and will serve as the first part or cour of the season. On a surface level, this certainly seemed like an odd decision since the movie had just been released and fans would definitely prefer for the season to just pick off where it left off.

Be that as it may, it seems that this 7-parter will not just be regurgitated from the movie but will include extensive new scenes that will make the arc feel more complete and rounded. This promise is already being honoured as the first episode of the season itself provides more backstory for one of the characters prior to boarding the deadly train, which wasn’t included in the movie. With the way the movie had one focus only, that being aboard the Train, more context via backstory and flashbacks would definitely help make the arc more satisfying.

However, it is also easy to understand that these are precious episodes, and to waste them on something we’ve seen before doesn’t seem like the best option. While that is arguably true, the fact that this season of Kimetsu no Yaiba is 2 cours (roughly 23-26 episodes) there is plenty of room for the story to cover the next arc in the Manga. Chronologically, season 2 should cover the highly beloved and most critically acclaimed arc, the Entertainment District Arc. A personal favourite of mine as well, this arc once more has Tanjiro and friends follow a veteran Demon Slayer (like Rengoku in Mugen Train) to an area where although seemingly harmless, is actually the lair of a highly lethal Demon. Led this time by the Sound Pillar Uzui Tengen, Tanjiro and company will have to infiltrate several suspect brothels in the bustling entertainment district to search for the Demon in hiding. They are further faced with numerous complications as people have started to disappear under the noses, including Uzui’s wives.

With time not on their side and danger levels rising, Tanjiro and company will have to act quickly and smartly in order to circumvent the hidden enemy and put an end to their machinations. This arc, if done well, should serve as an extremely worthy successor of the first season with storytelling that appears to have stepped a few gears up in terms of writing and action. And with how well Ufotable adapted season 1 and the movie, there is little doubt that season 2 will also be a feast to the senses.
