What is the Secret to Happiness?

What do you think is the secret to a happy and fulfilling life? Some of us may say it’s money because when you’re rich it certainly opens the door to more opportunities in life. With riches, you get to enjoy a better lifestyle with better food and clothes and you can spend your riches on whatever you desire. So that should lead to happiness right?

Some of us may say that the secret to happiness is fame. Imagine being Ed Sheeran, one of the world’s best-selling music artists who has sold 100million singles worldwide. He has countless fans who worship him. Surely he’s happy, right? That’s debatable because let’s not forget singers like Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley who were famous and remain legends till today but they weren’t exactly the happiest people on the planet. So if the secret to happiness is not riches and fame, then what is?

According to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, the secret to a happy and healthy life is having good relationships with others. The study examined the lives of 724 men in America from 1938 until they grew old. Based on its findings, people who were socially connected to family, friends and community were healthier, happier and lived longer. And loneliness literally kills. People who were more isolated from others found that they were less happy, their health declined sooner and they also lived shorter lives. So bottom line? If you want to be happy, focus on cultivating relationships. Strengthen the ones you already have with family and friends and always be open to forging new connections.

The next secret to happiness lies in one word – “flow”. “Flow” is a state of mind where one becomes fully immersed in an activity. When in flow, a person is completely absorbed in what they are doing that they lose track of time. Flow is often associated with work or a hobby that you enjoy and are quite good at. For example, you can experience flow when partaking in creative pursuits like writing and painting, or sports like running and tennis. So to put it in simple terms, if you want to be happy pursue your passions or take part in activities that you enjoy more often.

Another thing that affects our happiness is the choices we make in life. According to some researchers, making positive choices like returning a wallet found stuffed with cash to its rightful owner or remaining faithful to one’s spouse is part of the secret to happiness. So here’s a solid reason why you should start making more positive choices in your everyday life.

So I guess the secret to happiness is not such a secret after all. If you want to be happy, start cultivating good, close relationships with others; doing activities or work that engage you and making positive choices in life. Try out these suggestions for yourself and see if they work in creating a happier you. I personally hope they do!
